The Work of Flowers is an experimental documentary that explores how a garden project engages its community. Established in 1994 in a predominantly African American neighborhood in Durham, North Carolina, the Southeastern Efforts Developing Sustainable Spaces’(SEEDS) Demonstration Garden has evolved to reflect the changing neighborhood, the involved residents, and the activists brought in by the opportunities that the garden provides. The documentary integrates images of the developing garden with the recollections and impressions of those who helped create it. Through this process, it also examines the state of the surrounding neighborhood, which has gone through transformations from a thriving Victorian community, through decline, and toward current revitalization.
